Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Like his younger brother Louis-Vincent-Léon (1787-1820), Armand-Julien Pallière studied with his father, artist Jean-Baptiste Pallière in Bordeaux, before joining François-André Vincent's studio in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1808 until his departure for South America in 1817.
This encounter opened Pallière doors at the Brazilian court, and the future Dom Pedro I of Brazil commissioned from him a series of portraits, as well as views of Rio de Janeiro.
Our painting, painted in Rio, depicts a French Naval Officer on his ship, with the emblematic Sugarloaf Mountain in the background. The Work is signed, situated and dated 1820 to the lower left.
According to a label on the back of the picture, the subject is Amedée Fréon de Homecourt.
The painting is an oil on canvas which Has been mounted on board. The painting has been expertly restored. The size of the painting is 41 x 33 cm, the overall size with its beautiful antique 19th century frame is 55 x 47 cm
