"The Cattle Fair": Oil by John Holland

19th century
Description

JOHN HOLLAND: a fine quality and beautifully painted OIL PAINTING on canvas entitled" The Cattle Fair".

This exquisite and finely detailed painting depicts all the hustle and bustle of a cattle fair in a busy English market town. The detail is extraordinary, with various people milling around; sheep in their pen; horses of various types tethered and waiting patiently for proceedings to finish, and all this against the backdrop of the town square with the church behind. Signed twice, and further signed on the original label to the reverse. Excellent condition. 31.5 x 24.5ins (80 x 62cms)

***John Holland (active 1831-1879) lived in Nottingham, and it is therefore likely this depicts a market town in the Midlands.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
