Oil Painting Of Bulls After Paulus Potter

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on oak panel after the great seventeenth century Dutch painter of animals Paulus Potter. The oil is of a fine quality painted quite thinly but with exceptional detail. It shows two bulls fighting in a typical Dutch style landscape and is after a similar print by Potter. The painting is not signed this is often the case with early works and particularly when the painting is after another work. The painting is in good untouched condition. The work is mounted in a superb original gilt frame in the rococo taste, which is probably the original, it has had some old repair but is in great country house condition. The panel has obviously shrunk a little over the years and is now slightly too small for the frame but the edges which are only slightly visable have been blanked in so do not stand out. The is a great early work most likely dating to the early nineteenth century and has a wonderful look of a great stately home. C.1820.
