Description

Artist: Joseph Appleyard (1908-1960).

Title: "Carthorses passing a haystack".

Signed and dated 1941.

Pen and ink drawing.

Size: 8 3/4"x 12 1/4". Framed size: 16 1/2"x 20".

In good ready to hang condition. Free UK delivery.

Painter of sporting subjects in oils and watercolours; draughtsman in black and white.

Studied at evening classes at the Leeds School of Art 1925-32, but in the main was a self-taught artist. Taught art in Leeds, Keighley and at the Swartmore Settlement (Leeds).

He received numerous commissions to paint racehorses, including several post-war winners of the Derby and St. Leger. Exhibited at the R.B.A. and at many exhibitions in the North of England, including several one-man shows in Yorkshire. Contributed many illustrations to the Dalesman. Lived in Leeds. Killed in a road accident in Leeds when alighting from a bus.
