ST IVES SOCIETY OF ARTISTS.
Charles Walter Simpson was the son of a major-general in the army.
Simpson was in St Ives by 1905. He took lessons from John Noble Barlow and Arnesbury Brown. He was also involved with the artists at Newlyn.
In 1910 he went to study art in Paris at Julian's Academy.
He returned to England and met Ruth Alison, also an artist. They were engaged a couple of days later and married in 1913. They lived in Newlyn and then Lamorna.
In 1915 he was awarded a gold medal at the Panama Pacific international Exhibition.
In 1916 they opened an art school in St Ives at 1 and 2 Piazza Studios, which they ran until 1924.
Simpson painted a large series of paintings of wild birds. These were exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, in 1920. There was another series of the Herring Fishing Season at St Ives in 1924.
He went on to illustrate books and to create pictures of horses and hunting.
Cattle and farm scenes were among his favourite subjects.
He became a member of the St Ives Society of Artists in 1943.
Thereafter he continued to create many works of art, often painted with impressively quick ease.
He is described as an extremely cultured and interesting man.
He had 48 works at the Royal Academy.
He is represented in a large number of public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and museums in Truro and Penzance.
2005 saw the publication of John Branfield's important book about Simpson, also an exhibition at Penlee House.
