Large Victorian Oil Painting in Superb Gilt Frame

A very interesting, original and decorative large oil on canvas painting. The painting is titled on the reverse 'A love suit before the cottage door' and shows a lady preparing vegetables while a young fellow is chatting to her over the fence. The quality of the painting is superb and the detail in the background just lovely. The work is signed J Klause, the is Josef Klaus 1812-1877 who was an Austrian painter who seems to have worked for the Austrian court. The painting title etc on the reverse is in English and I believe that the work was either exhibited in England or from a great English country house collection where paintings were often catalogued. The painting is mounted in the original frame which is huge and impressive, the frame is in completely original condition right down to the gilding. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition with a faint craqueleure. The whole is a superb artwork with the most impressive country house look and a great period decorative item. C.1860.
