Unusual Night Scene Watercolour By William Bartol Thomas

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A most unusual and superb watercolour by the highly regarded and sort after Lincolnshire artist William Bartol Thomas 1887-1947. The painting shows a scene of Grantham, Lincolnshire in total darkness, this is the most difficult time of day to paint and all is worked in shades of gray and black with just the odd pin point of colour to indicate lights in the town. The painting is broad and loose with more and more detail in the darkness the more you look into it. The painting has been highlighted with the use of gum arabic in places to intensify the darkness. The whole is a real tour de force of the watercolourists art. A most unusual work by a very talented artist, signed to the lower right. The painting is in excellent condition and mounted in a later mount and frame. C.1910.
