Description

This is a superbly drawn original pencil drawing of the painting 'Sacrifice at Lystra' (Raphael). The scene shows how after witnessing the cure of a cripple the inhabitants of Lystra mistake Paul and Barnabas for the gods Jupiter and Mercury and prepare to offer a sacrifice to them. Paul tears his clothes in dismay and they try to stop the sacrifice, admonishing the Lystrians for their idolatry.

The original painting from 1515 is in the Royal Collection and was intended as a design for a tapestry to be hung in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. This pencil drawing is wonderfully executed copy of the painting. It dates from around 1850 and is in a magnificent period frame, deeply swept and gilded.

This measures 68cms by 49cms overall including the frame.
