Portrait of a Lady C.1830; Follower of Jan Adam Kruseman (1804-1862)

Exquisite bust length portrait of an elegant lady. The artist has portrayed their pretty young sitter wearing fashionable clothing for the period and her feminine silhouette with the sloping shoulders are emphasised by the large gathered full sleeves. This portrait also shows the pleated panels of fabric trimming the gown around the bust and shoulders and the elaborate hair curls popular in the 1830’s.

The fluid handling shows all the vigour and style of Jan Kruseman and the the influence of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Amsterdam of which Kruseman was Director. Uniquely this portrait is in excellent condition coupled with the fact that it has not had to undergo a lining process. This is very beneficial as it is in almost totally untouched condition. To add to that it is presented in its original gilt frame. This intimate portrayal of feminine beautify is an outstanding example.

Jan Adam Kruseman was a Dutch painter. He was a celebrated portrait painter in his time. He received his first drawing lessons in Amsterdam as a 15-year-old, where he enlisted as a member of the Drawing Academy. Between 1822 and 1824, he continued in Brussels under the leadership of François-Joseph Navez (1787-1869) and Jacques Louis David (1748-1825). Jan Adam Kruseman was a versatile painter of both historical and religious pieces, but he has become especially famous for his portraits. Among the total of 588 works of his hand are about 500 portraits, mainly of the nobility and the wealthy citizens. He was Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
