Japanese Watercolour Paintings on Silk Geishas 19th Century

Description

This is a pair of very finely painted portraits of Geishas on silk. The portraits, painted in deep gouache colours, date from the Meiji period and show the Geishas in their formal kimono robes, with the typical decoratively tied 'obi' around the middle and the slip on platform shoes, called 'geta' which kept the young ladies from getting their garments dirty when walking. The Geishas have beautifully made up hair and faces and one carries a fan, the other, a small koi fish in a glass bowl.

The paintings are in perfect condition with no damage or restoration and they are in smart lacquered frames which suit them well. They are a good size, each measuring 68 cms by 30 cms including the frames.

UK insured delivery is £18.

Rams Head Antiques is a family business based in Wolsingham in Weardale where we have had shop premises for 28 years. The shop is generally open every Saturday from 11 am till 3 pm.

You are most welcome to visit the shop but please always check to confirm we are open before travelling.
