William G Meadows Large Oil Painting

A large and very decorative Victorian oil on canvas by William G Meadows. The scene which is inscribed on the reverse shows Highenden church, Buckinghamshire. Higenden church became a scene of pilgrimage for Victorians after the burial there of Disraeli in 1881, indeed Queen Victoria went there herself. The painting shows people making that very pilgrimage to the tomb on the end of the church. The scene is quintessentially English with blue skies, greenery and cattle at rest. The painting is signed by the artist and although not dated would be around 1885. William G Meadows was from a family of painters and was active through the majority of the Victorian period painting purely commercially, scenes either of Venice or the English countryside both of which are very desirable. The painting has been professionally cleaned but other than that is in untouched condition.
