This rare barometer was issued by Harry Hall Limited to advertise their wares in various retail outlets during the early part of the century, the engraving to the dial reads:
“Harry Hall Ltd, The gold medal coat, breeches, habit & costume specialists. 181 Oxford Street & 149 Cheapside W1 London EC2. Worth remembering Hall marked clothes are the best for all weathers. Made in Great Britain.”
The originator of the company, Harry Hall was born in East Grinstead in 1856 and began his career in tailoring in 1870. By 1891 he had formed “Harry Hall Esq” and his canny use of advertising on such items as barometers, button hooks and letter openers which he gave away for free were a catalyst for his rise to prominence.
His premises were bombed during the blitz however unlike most who suffered the same fate, this lead to him reopening his stores in Oxford Street and Cheapside near St Pauls. The company still exists today providing quality clothing and accessories to the equestrian market.
