VERY LARGE 19TH CENTURY ENGRAVING - HARRINGTON BIRD

A very impressive 19th century hand coloured engraving of the 'Turf Favourites 1887' by Harrington Bird and published in 1889 by F C McQueen & Sons of London.

53 x 35 inches

This fabulous engraving was formerly the property of the late watchmaker Dr George Daniels. It was purchased from the antiques department in Harrods and still bears the label to the reverse.

We have had this stunning image professionally cleaned and reframed to the highest of standards. The colours remain vibrant. The overall dimensions are 53 inches wide x 35 inches high.

A superb antique that would look fabulous in any environment, period or modern.

Information on the artist Harrington Bird:

Harrington Bird was born into a British military family to in India in 1846. He was educated in London and intended to join the military before turning to art. In 1875 Bird moved to Montréal where he took the post of Director of Art with the Board of School Commissions. He exhibited at, a became a member of, the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1885, he returned to London, where he worked in both oils and watercolor and painted a variety of subjects, though he known best for his sporting works. He continued to exhibit his art at many institutions, including the Royal Academy, London. He designed many etchings of prominent English race horses, particularly Derby champions. Bird had a fine eye for showing the movement of the horse's body. A number of prints were done after his works, including the Queen's Race Winners, a series of thirteen racehorse portraits, including this one, 'Turf Favorites 1887'.
