Superb Royal Academy Marine Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A wonderful oil on artist''s board marine painting. The work is very much in the manner of the English impressionist''s of the twenties and thirties. The scene shows a ship under full sail on choppy seas. The work retains the exhibition label on the reverse which tells the ship to be the Coniston and sailing off Scarborough, with the title being ''the coming squall''. The painting also shows on the reverse that it was accepted for the Royal Academy in 1940. The painting is signed William j. Mann and dated 1939. I can find no record of the artist and as he is obviously a painter of great ability I can only think with the date of the work that he may well have gone to war not long after the painting was done. The painting is in the original gilt frame and the work has been professionally cleaned. This is a great piece of twentieth century marine painting and should not be underated because of the lack of information on the artist.
