Large Alfred Oliver Landscape Oil Painting

A super example of the work of the artist Alfred Oliver, this scene shows a mountain landscape with sheep grazing and the sun bursting through the cloud and the haze. The painting is signed by the artist, who was from Nottingham but moved to Wales, where this was certainly painted. Alfred Oliver had a great ability to paint weather conditions and times of day and this is a tour de force example of that. The painting is so fine you can see sheep disappearing into the haze in the distance, and the sky with the clouds and the heat of the sun is just wonderful. A highly regarded landscape artist Alfred Oliver is much collected and exhibited seven times at the Royal Academy between 1886 and 1921. The painting on artist's board has been professionally cleaned and was previously in the collection of Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire. The work is mounted in a Victorian period gilt frame, which has had some repair over the years. C.1900.
