Portrait of a Lady, Dutch C.1700; Circle of Gerrit Alberts (1663-1757)

18th century
Description

Oil on canvas.

Portrait of an Elegant Lady, Dutch c.1700, oil on canvas

Circle of Gerrit Alberts (1663-1757)

Beautifully and meticulously rendered throughout this beautiful sitter has been depicted in a silver silk dress and a luxurious crimson mantle. The ‘fontange coiffure’ hairstyle as seen in this portrait was popular around 1700. At first the style consisted of a small pile of curled hair with ribbons and bows just above the forehead, small curls over the temples called "confidents," with long curls falling over one shoulder.

On the stretcher is a handwritten inscription in Dutch “oudheidkundig genootschap” which could be the Royal Antiquarian Society that was an association founded in Amsterdam in 1858 to promote the knowledge of the past by establishing and maintaining collections in archaeology and history. They own a large collection of tens of thousands of objects of history and art, such as paintings, furniture, textiles, books, drawings and prints, plates, fans, coins and medals. A large part of the collection is on loan to various museums throughout the Netherlands, notably the Rijksmuseum.

Gerrit Alberts (1663-1757) was born in Nigmegen and was a prolific portrait painter. His style was similar to Godfred Kneller and was notable for its good drawing. The present portrait sits in the earlier period of the artist’s career where later his colouring was more cool and silvery.
