A fine oil on canvas by highly regarded genre artist George Sheridan Knowles 1863-1931. The scene is titled ''A welcome hosterly'' and shows a couple having arrived from their travels, warming themselves by the inn fire. The work is typical of the artist and highly technically skilled, while quite a traditional work the influence of impressionist art can be seen in the way he has captured the light from the fire so wonderfully. The painting is not signed, or at least does not appear to be signed, but it can be said to be absolutely by the artist as it retains the exhibition title on the reverse which is in his handwriting and the frame (which is the original) is also exactly the same as others he used. The artist was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in Manchester.
