Rare Verre Eglomise Silhouette

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very unusual eighteenth century silhouette company worked in the verre eglomise technique of painting glass. The painting shows a fine eighteenth century gentleman in silhouette profile with detail being worked in thinner paint to all light to shine through, this is aided by the glass being convex. The border is a stylised floral design in black, white and gilt. There has been some degrading of the white paint, though this is not noticeable as the backing is white. The piece is in the original solid walnut frame which has had a little knock. A very rare and interesting item, most likely continental. C.1770.
