Nottingham Oil Painting by John Rawson Walker

A fine oil on canvas landscape showing the city of Nottingham. The painting is worked on canvas and is typical of landscape painting of the period. The view is Nottingham from Wilford Hill and in the distance can be seen the city at the start of the industrial revolution with some factory chimneys smoking, and to the right of the painting is the famous old trent bridge and in the centre on the hill, Nottingham castle. The landscape is put in a human context with figures to the lower right and a wagon in the centre. The painting is attributed to the artist John Rawson Walker 1796-1873 on the reverse and is absolutely typical of his work. Walker was born in Nottingham and trained as an artist under Thomas Barber. Walker became a landscape painter of the highest order specialising in classical scenes and scenes of Nottingham. Rawson Walker's work forms part of the collection at Nottingham castle and in his lifetime he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institute and Suffolk Street between 1817 and 1865. The painting is in excellent condtion having had a clean and a little professional restoration. The painting is mounted in the finest quality modern handmade and coloured swept frame, aged to be appropriate for the period of the painting. The painting dates to C.1830 although as is typical of the artist he painted his landscapes and figures at an earlier time.
