PORTRAIT OF KING CHARLES II, HALF LENGTH, WEARING GARTER ROBES
 
Oil on canvas presented in a carved giltwood Lely frame
 
The size overall being 82 cm x 97 cm (32 x 37 inch approx) painting 64 x 78cm ( 23 x 28 inches approx),
 
Provenance: Lord Croft, Croft Castle, Herefordshire (believed to have hung here); now national trust property
 
Mr. Henry Page Croft, Fanhams Hall, Hertfordshire;
 
anon sale, Sotheby''s, 2 Oct 1950, withdrawn and retained by the family;
 
thence by descent.
 
This portrait is in overall good condition having had restoration in the past. There is some Craquelure to face.
 
Seen under UV lamp - there is some potential old retouching,
 
Likely old retouching to face. Not recently relined.The frame is in overall good condition some self coloured losses
 
This portrait is naturally dark( black wig,black background)
 
as was the fashion in the 17th century for some portraiture.
