Portrait Oil Painting After the Old Master

A fine oil on artists board after an old master original. The painting dating to the Victorian period would have been painted by an artist copying an old master work either for commercial reasons to sell or for academic reasons. The work is technically very good and on good quality artist board from Edinburgh, so most likely by an accomplished artist, although not signed. The painting has been mounted in an eighteenth century solid carved wood frame, a rare commodity in itself and gives the painting a real look of the authetic Renaissance item. The frame has lost it’s gilding mostly and gilt is only left to highlight the carving. The painting is in excellent condition and the whole is a desirable decorators piece. C.1880
