Landscape Oil Painting by George Butler

Interesting oil on canvas depicting a landscape of trees and scrubland with purple flowers, with a cottage in the distance. The work is plein air, very quick with broad confident strokes of colour, typical English impressionism. The painting is signed George Butler who did exhibit at the Royal Academy and lived in Hertfordshire, he seems to have been active 1936-39 and this work was painted during the war as it is on a Winsor and Newton wartime canvas. The painting is in the original frame (has some old woodworm that has been treated) and both the painting and frame are quite dark and subdued. C.1940
