Primitive Portrait of Welsh Sea Captain from Cardigan Bay, Circa 1800

Primitive half-portrait of a sea captain, reputedly from Cardigan Bay, holding his prized telescope.

Oil painting in its original frame, circa 1800.

The frame is pine with a gesso finish, which is worn and chipped and been re-painted at some point. The canvas has been professionally re-lined.

Owning a part share in a ship was a common investment for farmers around the west coast of Wales in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Every community had a close connection to seafaring and trade, and artisan artists captured the vessels and, more rarely, their captains.

Height of frame: 33.75 inches; 86 cms. Height of image: 27.5 inches; 70 cms.

Width of frame: 29.25 inches; 74 cms. Width of image: 22.75 inches; 58 cms.

Depth of frame: 3 inches; 7.5 cms.
