Portrait of a Lady, Possibly Mary Queen of Scots, 18th Century

In this interesting image a lady dressed in Tudor costume – a fur trimmed black jacket and a black cap – is set before a plain background within a feigned oval. The various jewellery denotes wealth and there is an old handwritten inscription on verso describing the sitter to be Mary Queen of Scots. It is unknown whether this is factual as there were periods where it was fashionable to be depicted in fanciful dress or even as gods or goddesses. A second label states “1/6/94 Bot from W. Burrows & Sons (?) Portrait of a Lady by Garret, from Lord Rostock Collection”.

The handling of the paint is very good in passages, particularly areas of the face which has been delicately and meticulously portrayed.

A feature of this sale is the superb 18th century hand carved gilt and gesso frame, which is of very good quality and condition for age.
