A very interesting oil on canvas, which has only be painted in monochrome colours or en grisaille from the french eighteenth century term. The painting shows the full moon shining through the ruined window of Melrose abbey, and the use of only greys, black and white help to create a striking Gothic atmosphere. The painting bares a similarity to a work by Turner and it was probably painted after this work. The painting is unsigned but can be dated to C.1880.
