Large Old Master Oil Painting 'Daniel in the Lion's Den' After Rubens

A huge Seventeenth century oil painting of 'Daniel in the lion's den' after the original by Rubens from C.1614 which hangs in the National Gallery. The painting is quite naive and has a huge amount of charm because of it, the lions almost have human clownish faces. The painting follows closely the original by Rubens but has been altered in composition. The painting has been lined in the nineteenth century and overall is in very good condition with a repair patch and some professional restoration. The heavy wooden frame is the original and has also had some repair. This is a most imposing and decorative painting with a great country house look and while a religious subject the nature of the painting and in particular the naive lions give a charm and humour. C.1700.
