A large fine portrait of a youthful gentleman, portrayed in a black double breasted coat, silk cravat, and a jewelled pin. The handling and rendering appear sophisticated and the artist achieved a good sense of realism in the hair, face and the piercing eyes. This is the work of an artist who excelled in the oil technique and also had a keen eye for characterisation. The sitter’s lips show a half smile; as a break away from the all too usual stoicism in some 19th century portraits. This realist artist communicated a more friendly demeanour. Signed and dated “J. Dieg?t, 1851”.
