"The Nether Bow": a beautifully composed OIL PAINTING ON PANEL which which depicts a busy "market" scene in Edinburgh.

The atmosphere of this painting captures all the hustle and bustle of 19th century town life, with stall-holders bargaining; children playing; dogs barking and various onlookers leaning out of upper windows. Signed lower left. Dimensions (including the original gilt frame) 20ins x 17ins (50 x 43cms).

*The Nether Bow Port was one of the entrances into the old town of Edinburgh. James Webb (1825-1895) studied under Clarkson Stanfield and painted marine and landscapes living all his life in Chelsea.
