Frederick Stuart Richardson R.S.W., R.I., R.O.I. (1855-1934)
Frederick Stuart Richardson was born in Clifton, Bristol, on the 9th of December, 1855. He was the second son of the Rev. John Richardson who was Rector of Sandy in Bedfordshire, from 1858 to 1913.
This connection with the sea, the North Yorkshire coast and Captain Cook, (who had himself worked for a ship’s chandler in Staithes) obviously made a deep impression on Stuart Richardson.
Throughout his working life Richardson made annual vists to the Whitby, Staithes and Runswick Bay area. He was an active member of the Staithes Group and participated in the exhibitions of the Staithes Art Club and the annual exhibitions of the Yorkshire Union of Artists.At the turn of the century, his elder brother inherited a property at Aislaby and, as a local vicar, was able to provide him with accommodation. Richardson also painted in Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Holland, France and Cornwall. He met his wife while painting in Cornwall and their honeymoon, in 1912, was spent in Holland. In France he visited Hannah and Fred Mayor at Montreuil-sur-Mer.
He moved with his family to Ashton, Bristol, in 1917, where he died on the 22nd April, 1934, at the age of eighty-eight.
