Frederick William Hayes was born in Liverpool in 1848.
He lived in or near Liverpool until about 1880 when he moved to London. He founded the Liverpool Watercolour Society. As well as a painter, he was a novelist, playwright and economist. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham (35 times), Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (3), London Salon (6), Manchester City Art Gallery (2), Royal Academy (14), Royal Society of British Artists (2), Royal Cambrian Academy (177), Royal Institute (4), and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (3).
