This is a very impressive Victorian oil on canvas painting by William Watson Jnr. It depicts a most dramatic scene with a pair of highland bulls locking horns while the anxious herd look on from above.

The painting is in excellent order in its original substantial gilt frame.

The painting is signed and dated 1883.

The frame measures 50" wide by 38" high overall. The canvas measures 3 feet wide by 2 feet high.

William Watson Jnr (fl. 1866-72, died 1921) was a Liverpool painter of animals and landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, as well as at the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street. His paintings have been exhibited at venues including the Liverpool Walker Gallery, the Mappin Art Gallery, the Sunderland Art Gallery and the Thomas B. Walker Art Collection, Minneapolis, U.S.A.

He was the son William Watson, a London painter of miniature portraits, who also exhibited at the Royal Academy.
