Oil on canvas,half length . Follower of James Northcote, housed in a gilt frame.
size overall 83cm x 71 cm (32.5 inches approx x 27 ¾ approx)
painting size 65 x 52 cm (26.5 x 20.5 inches approx)
condition Relined and restored,some retouching visible under uv light. Frame has some losses
to decoratrive gilding beneath which are self coloured.

Northcote was an apprentice to his father,who was a poor watchmaker of Plymouth,
he would in his spare time learn to use paintbrush and pencil.
In 1769 he left his father and started a career as a portrait painter.
later he went to London and was a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Two years later, he went to Italy to further his studies.
He retuned to England three years later , where John Opie and Henry Fuseli were his rivals.
Northcote’s many portraits were clearly influenced by Reynolds.
