World War Two Period Oil Of Raf Mosquito Planes

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

An unusual oil on canvas depicting a formation of RAF mosquitoes painted during World War Two. The painting shows the three planes flying out over the channel and have been identified as squadron 25. It is very unsual to get such a painting painted during the war rather as a remembrance afterwards. The painting is signed W F Burton and dated 1944. William Francis Burton 1907-1995 was a self taught artist who developed a huge popularity known for landscapes with golden skies his most famous work is ''Evening gold'', he was so popular that on his death lots of his work was issued as prints, this painting is unsual for him and must have been done during the war at one of the airfields in his native Norfolk. The painting has been mounted in a period oak frame with modern gilt slip, the whole is in excellent condition.
