Portrait of a Young Lady in White C.1910, by Frank W. Carter Rba, Rp.

1900 - 1920
Description

Oil on unlined canvas in the original gilt frame, signed upper right.

This is an absolutely beautiful portrait of the Edwardian period painted shortly before the horrors of the Great War seared Europe.

The attractive young sitter looks serenely out at the viewer, a landscape beyond, an image of calm and peace. She is dressed in very fashionable summer clothing of the period.

The artist has painted with great bravura and a heavy impasto which give a sense of immediacy. As the canvas has never having been lined the impasto is still prominent, as Carter meant it to be.

As is typical with thickly applied paint on canvas a strong craquelure or crazing has developed over the years but it does not detract from the painting.

FRANK WILLIAM CARTER (1870-1933) was the son of the artist Hugh Carter. He studied at the Slade under Legros and in Munich under L.S. Reutte.

He exhibited ten paintings at the Royal Academy and more at the NEAC, Groupil Gallery and the Paris Salon 1900-1933. He was a member of the Modern Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Ridley Art Club,

SIZE: 45 x 39.75 inches inc. frame.

PROVENANCE:Private Collection, Dorset.

Verso: old labels from the framemaker and a delivery label to Carter from Reeves of London, the artist's suppliers. Reeves stamp is also on the unlined canvas.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
