Description

Portrait of "William Stafford Brooksbank" (1864-1891).

Artist: Antoine de Salome. Exh: 1848-1868.

Chalks on paper. 18"x 13 1/4". Framed size: 27 3/4"x 22 3/4".

Signed and dated 1888. Inscribed on the reverse.

Now painting and frame cleaned and restored.

In good ready to hang condition.

Provenance: Healaugh Manor, North Yorkshire.

William Stafford Brooksbank was the brother of Sir Edward Clitherow Brooksbank (1858-1943). (see portrait of him in my sold section).

This wonderful portrait was painted when the sitter was 24 years of age. He died just 3 years later in India.

Antoine de Salome came to England in about 1848, and became a very successful society portrait painter, exhibiting 14 times at The Royal Academy, and twice at The Society of British Artists. HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and Lady Georgiana Hamilton being two of his sitters.
