Huge Victorian Oil Portrait

A huge life size oil on canvas portrait of Richard Parlby of Newark on Trent, in Nottinghamshire. The painting is typical of Victorian portraiture in the dress and setting, it is unusual in that the man is big and fat and jovial looking, almost like a Dickensian character. Richard Parlby is listed in the 1849 trade directory as a cabinet maker, auctioneer, appraiser and landlord of the Wing Tavern public house. The Parlby family are well known in Newark on Trent and are the owners of the local newspaper. The painting is mounted in the original wonderful quality gilt frame. The painting is a good condition and has been professionally cleaned, the painting typically for this type of portraiture is unsigned. The frame has some losses and appears to have been re-gilded several times. The whole has the wonderful look of a great country house, the size of the work make it hugely decorative. C.1860.
