A stunning modernist oil on artists board depicting a bowl of fruit with wine bottle. The painting is worked in thick impasto oil paint with the texture used to highlight depth and light on different materials in the most competent of ways. The setting is dramatic with the bright colour of the fruit drawing the eye from the darker background. The painting is signed and has an exhibition label on the reverse, the artist is Laura Butler, and the address London, so she is likely to have been at one of the major art schools, however I can find no record of her. The painting is on a quality Windsor and Newton canvas board, and as well as the exhibition label, it has labels for major framers; Bourlet and the Rowley gallery all pointing to the fact that the painting and the artist were highly regarded making the mystery surrounding the artist even greater.
