Henry John Dobson was a Scottish genre painter working in Edinburgh. He also lived and worked, for short periods, in Bradford, Peebles, and Dalry, Kircudbrightshire. He exhibited many works at Glasgow Institute (48 times), Royal Cambrian Academy (54), Royal Scottish Academy (62), Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (55), and also at Dowdeswell Galleries, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, The Royal Academy, London, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal Institute. He was a member of The Royal Cambrian Academy and The Royal Scottish Society of Painters. His son Cowan Dobson was also a famous artist.
