A lovely example of Joseph Mellor's work.
Joseph Mellor. (1827-1888).
Joseph Mellor was born in Barnsley, where his family worked in the linen industry. He also went into the industry as a weaver, and then progressed to a Jacquard card stamper.
In 1850 he married Mary Thackray, also a weaver, in St. Mary's Church, Barnsley.
Joseph and Mary had two children, William, born in 1851, who also became a very well know painter, and Emmeline, born in 1854.
In the 1850's he decided to become a full time artist, having been a keen part time artist, already, for some years.
He then moved, with his family, to Leeds, where his older brother had a weaving business, and where William and Emmeline found work.
They then moved to Bradford where Joseph died in 1888.
Joseph painted mainly landscapes in oils, which can be confused with his son's, William's work, William having been taught by his father, hence their work being very similar.
William Greenwood Fine Art has dated this piece to the 1870s.
