The barometer frame is constructed of rosewood and is profusely inlaid with floral satinwood marquetry and string inlay. The shaped pediment incorporates a satinwood-inlaid urn flanked by further satinwood floral inlay. There is a small ebony moulding to the top pediment. At the top, sits a porcelain backed mercury thermometer, which allows you to read the temperature in both Fahrenheit and Celsius units of measure. Further below, is a large round beveled glass, with a brass bezel, which houses and protects the porcelain pressure dial. The lettering on the dial is in black and but the first letter of each word is red, which allows for clearer legibility. There is a simple guide on the porcelain dial, which explains that if the pressure falls, the weather will be wet with more wind. If the pressure rises, the weather will be dry with less wind. The pressure dial is flanked by further satinwood floral marquetry and string inlay. On the back of the barometer, there is the original brass-hanging wall hook. All in all, this is a practical but very elegant barometer, which is in excellent original condition.
