A fine pair of oil on canvas horse portraits by the artist J.H.Shaw. The reverse of the single horse is inscribed: ''The Marquis of Titchfield'' The property of F.Peatfield Esquire, Family Farm, Retford, Notts. The pair while slightly different sizes have always been together and show sire, mare and foal. The paintings are typical of the artists work as the horses are very detailed and the background somewhat plain. J.H.Shaw was a specialist traveling horse portraitist who worked in the east midlands during the Victorian period. The paintings are both signed and dated 1895. The works are mounted in modern bespoke handmade and finished frames, antiqued to the appropriate age. The whole are in excellent condition and have a wonderful country house look.
