Description

James Arundel. (1875-1960).

A very good still life of "Canu".

Signed and dated 1937.

Oil on panel. 30"x 23". Framed size: 35"x 28".

Price: £1,290. Fee UK delivery.

In very good ready to hang condition.

Painter of landscapes, flowers and portraits in oils. A self taught artist. In business as a painter, repairer and builder of lighthouses, and only began to paint seriously in the 1930’s. He exhibited at the R.A. and several times at the Paris Salon. He favoured an expressionist style with vigorous brushwork and strong colour. Provided may illustrations for The Dalesman. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Cartwright Memorial Hall in Bradford in 1959, and the same gallery has examples of his work in its collection. Lived at North Somercotes in Lincolnshire and later in Bradford, where he died at the age of eighty-four.
