A fine quality oil on canvas after the famed Joseph Wright of Derby. The painting shows a campsite within Abbey ruins and a blacksmith''s forge, complete lit by fire and moonlight. The work has a high level of competency and as a work is hugely atmospheric. The work is inscribed Wright of Derby, but obviously is worked in his style than rather by him. The painting has been lined in the early twentieth century and framed at that point in this gilt frame. The painting from the style I would date to the early nineteenth century. The work is in good condition with a fine craqueleure all over.
