Alfred Provis was a painter of domestic scenes, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1846-76. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street, The British Institution and various other venues. Provis specialised in small, detailed interiors of cottages and rural farmhouses, very often with women and young children performing household chores. His paintings are predominantly brown in colour but are breathtakingly illuminated, drawing the viewer's eye to inspect and admire every facet of the scene he has created.
