Description

This is a splendid oil painting by renowned Victorian artist George Armfield, depicting two dogs in a highland landscape. The painting is signed to the lower left. The painting (an oil on board) likely dates from around 1860. It is mounted in an attractive gilt frame which perfectly complements the piece, the painting measures 26.5cm by 22.5cm. Including the frame this measures 41cm by 46cm.

George Armfield (known as George Armfield Smith until 1840) is believed to have been born in Bristol in 1808. He was the son of William Armfield Hobday (1771-1831), a portrait painter whose clientele included King George IV and the Rothschild family.

George obtained an artistic education from his father, and by the age of sixteen had devoted himself to a career in painting. The animals within Armfield's works are portrayed as regal and charming, with a realism that few other artists could achieve. In his own lifetime he created a great demand for his work and he remains to this day one of England's finest and most desirable animal artists.
