An interesting oil on canvas laid down on board by the highly regarded artist Frank o. Salisbury. The painting shows a view through a door in an Italian palazzo or monastery. The painting is inscribed on the reverse: The Cell, Saint Marks, vettra. The painting is marked with the artists monogram and is mounted in a nineteenth century gilt frame with a modern slip. C.1900.Frank Salisbury was a painter and stained-glass designer. He was born in Harpenden, the son of a plumber and glazier, and was apprenticed to his brother in a stained-glass workshop in St Albans before winning a scholarship to the *Royal Academy, London, where he studied 1892–7. A scholarship to visit Italy in 1896 and his admiration for Renaissance frescos helped establish his taste for large scenes of pageantry.
