The painting is much in the influence of the Bloomsbury group and the fashion for all things Japanese of the late Victorian period. Painted in oil on artists board the work shows a traditionally dressed Japanese lady making offering at a shrine. The worked is signed by monogram E.G. and dated 1894, I have however been unable to identify the artist, although it is obviously one of great talent. The work is mounted in a Victorian period ebonised frame, with a modern gilt slip. The whole is in good condition, with the frame having had some restoration and the painting having been cleaned.
