: A fine, Victorian oil on canvas of substantial size, depicting a fisherman''s wife and daughter awaiting his return from sea. The wife is show in the fore, raising her hand, shielding her eyes to look out to sea for her husbands boat. The daughter is clinging to her mother, perhaps her sweetheart is at sea also. The paintings is very well painted and the two figures are both beautiful and detailed, with the nets at their side they have been mending. The painting is remarkable in that it does not appear to be signed, this may be because this subject was a popular one in the Victorian period and it is copying another work. The work is in good order with a small repair, and a fine craqueleure. The painting is mounted in a modern gilt swept frame. The painting dates to C.1870.
