A fine example of prize animal painting. The scene shows a mare: ''Snowdrop'' with her two foals. The painting is by Fred Thurlby who was an itinerant painter of prize livestock who worked around Lincoln and Grantham in the early twentieth century. The painting is inscribed: Snowdrop 28 years & foals, foaled in 1920 and 21. The inscription on the reverse also reads: F Thurlby, pinx, Woolsthorpe, Grantham. The painting is signed and dated 1921. The frame is the original, but it has been later gilded and has some old repairs. The painting has been professionally cleaned and minor repairs done.
