Victorian Highland Oil by Wjcrampton

A fine quality Victorian oil on canvas depicting Highland Cattle in Scottish landscape. The scene shows dramatically in the foreground a group of surprised cattle, who have been drinking in the loch, in the background are the rising mountains wreathed in mist. The painting is a good example of this genre of Victorian painting, slightly unusual with the cows looking directly out of the painting. The work has been cleaned and a small tear professionally repaired. The painting is mounted in a modern gilt frame, which has been rubbed back to reveal some ebonised detail beneath. The work is signed W.J.Crampton, who was a prolific artist specializing in this type of Scottish scene, in the 1870's and 80's, he did exhibit but appears to have been a more commercial artist, providing highland scenes for the Victorian obsession with the Highlands.
